Fair to say, despite the fact Real Madrid have not picked up any major trophies during this period, Kylian Mbappe has been an excellent signing. Since the Frenchman arrived at the Bernabeu from Paris Saint-Germain, perhaps a couple of years later than Florentino Perez would've hoped, his end-product has been second to none.

The table below documents Europe's leading scorers since the start of last season.

As documented, only Harry Kane comes close to scoring the same number of club goals Mbappe has managed since the start of last season. This year, the Frenchman's tally of 29 goals and five assists means he has been directly involved in 59.6% of all los Blancos' goals across all competitions.

The most obvious example of his importance came in Piraeus, scoring all four during a 4-3 Champions League victory over Olympiacos. Well, Xabi Alonso is set to remain without his talisman for a little bit longer.

Kylian Mbappé injury latest

On Sunday, Real Madrid crushed Real Betis 5-1 at the Bernabeu; youngster Gonzalo Garcia scored a hat-trick, starting in place of Mbappe. The French frontman missed out as a result of a knee injury that had been bothering him for weeks, unable to recover in time for the weekend win.

Well, as reported by Spanish outlets on Tuesday, Mbappe will not be involved in this week's Supercopa de España either. He has instead remained in the Spanish capital to focus on his recovery.

The Supercopa was expanded by the RFEF back in 2020, so is now a four-team tournament taking place in Saudi Arabia. At this year's edition, Barcelona will face Athletic Club in the first semi-final in Jeddah on Wednesday. 24 hours later, Madrid rivals Atletico and Real clash, also at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. The final takes place on Sunday night.

Los Merengues have won three of the six Supercopas in its current format, but were smashed 5-2 by Barca in last year's final. This time, the pressure is really on Alonso to pick up the first silverware of the season, so aiming to do so without his superstar attacker is far from ideal. Mbappe has scored during both La Liga clashes with Atleti, but won't be adding to that tally in the Supercopa.

The most recent El Derbi Madrileno in September produced a 5-2 victory for los Colchoneros at the Metropolitano, so Diego Simeone would love a repeat of that scoreline 2,800 miles from home.

Upon their return to Spain, Madrid's next fixture will be a Copa del Rey round of 16 tie away from home against a Segunda Division side; Albacete Balompie, Burgos, Cultural Leonesa, Deportivo La Coruna and leaders Racing Santander are their current potential opponents.

It remains to be seen if Mbappé will be involved in that match and, depending on the Supercopa outcome, who knows if Alonso will still be the manager by then too.
