Jose Mourinho's teams are built on being hard to beat. This is why he makes his defence so strong, and why he has won so many trophies during his career. The incoming Real Madrid manager is set to be boosted by the additions of Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries, which will shore up Los Blancos' backline.
Real Madrid's best defence under Jose Mourinho is already taking shape
- Denzel Dumfries - Right-Back
- Antonio Rüdiger - Center-Back
- Ibrahima Konaté - Center-Back
- Álvaro Carreras - Left-Back
Trent Alexander-Arnold was a big signing for Real Madrid when they captured him from Liverpool. However, due to injuries, he made just 21 La Liga appearances last season without scoring, but did make four assists. He is often considered too offensive to be a right-back, which would not suit Mourinho's system. Dani Carvajal is leaving, which paves the way for Dumfries to walk straight into the side.
Dumfries is now 30, but he has been a key part of Inter Milan's two Serie A title wins and getting them to two Champions League finals. Los Blancos have been trophyless in the last two seasons. The addition of Dumfries and the appointment of Mourinho prove that they are focused on being successful for the here and now. There does not appear to be a long-term plan, but winning silverware in the next campaign is a must.
Konaté has been linked with Real Madrid for some time, and he is finally available to join the club when his contract at Liverpool runs out. Konaté was a key part of the Reds' second Premier League title win. However, he is not coming off the best of seasons. La Liga is less competitive than English soccer's top flight, so he should still be effective for Real Madrid.
Antonio Rüdiger may now be 33, but he is expected to stay with Real Madrid and sign a contract extension. The addition of Konate, who is just 27, should help Rüdiger, when dealing with pacy forwards. Whilst younger defenders such as Dean Huijsen and Raúl Asencio are waiting in the wings for their opportunities.
Álvaro Carreras is Real Madrid's best option at left-back. Ferland Mendy is injury-prone, whilst Fran García was used sparingly last season. The left side of the defence is where Los Blancos appear to be at their weakest. The potential addition of Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt could complete a very Mourinho-like back four.
