Real Madrid president Florentino Perez put forward the revolutionary Super League project to challenge the monopoly of UEFA in Europe and some of their unfair revenue sharing practices. However, in the past few years, a majority of clubs involved have pulled their name from the Super League, handing a major blow to Perez’s aspirations.
As a result of this, the proposed tournament never really got off the ground. And recently, Real finally resolved its differences with UEFA and signed a deal that officially put an end to the Super League, which had long been a source of friction between the two parties.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi spoke about the matter. He stated (as reported by Madrid Zone):
"Today's agreement between UEFA and Real Madrid is INCREDIBLE news for football, for Real Madrid, and above all, for the fans.
I want to thank Florentino Perez, the elegant, intelligent visionary, who always strives to improve and develop things.
Whoever says Florentino "lost" today knows NOTHING about football."
How Perez's improved relation with Al-Khelaifi could facilitate deal for top target
Real president Florentino Perez's relationship with Al-Khelaifi took a major hit following the transfer of Kylian Mbappe, who ran down his contract with PSG and joined Real for free.
That said, it looks like those wounds have finally started to heal. Infact, this recent statement from Al-Khelaifi praising Perez will go a long way at that. More importantly, this will open the door for a crucial transfer for Real. As many fans would have already guessed, the player in question is Vitinha.
The Portuguese playmaker is undoubtedly one of the best in the world, and the Los Blancos are in urgent need of a player of a similar profile in the absence of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
Vitinha will reportedly cost north of €100 million if a deal goes through, which is likely too expensive as things stand. However, if presented with an opportunity, Real will have to leave no stone unturned to sign the PSG man.
The Portuguese has made 32 appearances across competitions this season, posting six goals and 10 assists. He can play a variety of midfield roles and was key for Luis Enrique in last season's Champions League triumph.
It remains to be seen whether Real and PSG continue to improve their relationship. For now, Los Blancos’ focus should be back on the field, as the season is far from over and two major trophies are up for grabs, including the Champions League. And there wouldn't be a better way to celebrate the deal with UEFA than to win a 16th European title.
