Real Madrid are having a disappointing season to say the least. They were knocked out of the Champions League following their humiliating defeat in both legs of their quarter-final clash with Arsenal. The team has also been hit by a series of injuries to key players, while those who remained fit have failed to perform in important matches.
As if these hardships weren’t enough, a disciplinary investigation has now been launched involving one of the club’s forwards, adding to their troubles.
Vinicius Junior faces two year ban amid disciplinary investigation
Vinicius Junior is experiencing a sub-par season by his usually high standards. The Brazilian winger, who was the top performer last season, has struggled to maintain consistent form this season, showing only occasional flashes of his talent. Lately, Vinicius appeared to be regaining his form and confidence. However, it seems his struggles are far from over.
As reported by Marca, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio disclosed that a Brazilian firm called Tiberis Holding has submitted a formal complaint to FIFA's Ethics Commission's Investigation Chamber concerning Vinicius.
The Brazilian firm has called for a suspension of up to two years should the accusations be confirmed. Vinicius is associated to a company called All Agenciamento Esportivo, which is managed by his father and his agent, Thassilo Soares. The company has invested in ownership rights of professional football clubs.
Most recently, the company associated with Vinicius assumed control of a Brazilian side, Athletic Club. Given that Vinicius is still actively playing, this move could raise concerns over a possible conflict of interest.
FIFA is currently looking into the case. While Tiberis Holding is pushing for a two-year suspension, it appears unlikely that Vinicius will face the harshest penalty. Instead, he is more likely to receive a fine or be required to sell his shares in the clubs involved.
Vinicius, who lost the Ballon d'Or last season following a controversial decision, has looked like a shadow of his former self recently. There’s no doubt about his ability to perform at a high level which he has proven on many occasions. However, this recent news involving him is concerning. Vinicius will have plenty of time to invest in clubs later. These are the prime years of his career and he should be focusing solely on winning trophies and giving his all on the pitch.
