The Real Madrid rumour mill is in full flow following the reopening of the transfer window. That said, if recent history has taught us anything, it’s that Madrid are unlikely to add any major new faces during the winter period. However, the same cannot be said regarding departures.
Vinicius Junior was earlier in the news with reports linking him to Chelsea, which have thankfully been shut down since then. But it seems the Brazilian attacker wasn’t the only player on the West London Blues' transfer wishlist, as another star is reportedly wanted by the Premier League club, and the name might come as a surprise to many fans.
Chelsea are going through a turbulent period internally following the sacking of their manager, Enzo Maresca. Meanwhile, Liam Rosenior has been appointed as their new head coach. Now, reports have emerged claiming that the English tactician is keen to add a Madrid star to his squad.
Indeed, according to Fichajes (via TeamTalk), Rosenior has asked the Chelsea management to bring in Trent Alexander-Arnold on a six-month loan. The new Blues boss reportedly sees the right-back as a perfect fit for his style of football.
Chelsea eyeing another Real Madrid star after Vinicius news
Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid this season on a free transfer after his contract ran out with Liverpool. However, he hasn’t made the flying start that many fans were expecting.
The 27-year-old has appeared in 11 matches, contributing just one assist across all competitions so far this campaign. Although few could blame him, given his misfortune with injuries since his arrival.
Moreover, Dani Carvajal is providing strong competition for Trent, along with Federico Valverde, who has also done an admirable job at right-back. So, is there a possibility that Arnold could leave on loan to Stamford Bridge?
Well, honestly speaking, there’s little chance of that happening. First of all, Trent knows well enough that he will get his opportunities once he is fully fit, as Carvajal is in the closing stages of his career, with a departure in the near future not ruled out. Meanwhile, Valverde is not a natural fullback and would return to his preferred midfield position if given the chance.
Secondly, Chelsea already have a number of candidates for the right-back role, including Reece James, Malo Gusto, and Josh Acheampong, and it hardly seems practical for them to add another player for the same position.
As a result, this rumour should be taken with a pinch of salt. Then again, nothing is impossible in modern football, and only time will tell what lies ahead.
