Despite the win over Roma on Wednesday night, Real Madrid are in quite a bit of a pickle at the moment. There are so many things about this team that are absolutely wrong. Despite that, things do not seem to be changing too much, from the play style to the personnel that plays, to whoever comes on off the bench. Everything just seems a bit too complicated, and Jose Mourinho, who was brought in to change these things and fix the dressing room problem, has not been able to do so, or at least has not publicly tried to do so.
Now, obviously, this version of Real Madrid will still win some games here and there, including some big comebacks through individual brilliance. The fact of the matter is that there are many players who are playing based on hierarchy rather than merit. There is a sea of "untouchable" players who do not seem to get benched even when they are not playing well.
To that end, it is very, very clear to say that there should be only two untouchable players in this Real Madrid team: Thibaut Courtois and Jude Bellingham. There are many other untouchables, including these two at the moment. Fede Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and so many others keep playing despite not being in good form, and Real Madrid need to fix that as soon as possible.
Jude Bellingham and Thibaut Courtois are the only two consistent players at Real Madrid
If they want to name two players that have to be in the starting eleven every time, as long as they are playing as well as they usually play, those are Bellingham and Courtois. Any other player does not fully deserve to be in the starting eleven.
Mbappe has scored a bunch of goals here and there, but he has not looked nearly as convincing as fans hoped he would. Vinicius Junior has that untouchable status, and even he keeps starting every game despite being on the worst run of form he has been on in a very long time. Valverde has not had one single good performance in midfield this season. Every single good performance from the Uruguayan has been on the right flank, and despite that, despite his obvious lack of chemistry with Tchouameni, both of these players keep starting, and it does not make sense why.
To be absolutely clear, Courtois and Bellingham would also only start because they are Real Madrid's most consistent players. They wouldn't start because they are two superstars and two leaders, but because they always back their claims and they always give their all for Real Madrid.
The same cannot be said for any of the players mentioned above, and that is why things need to change. That is exactly why Real Madrid hired a manager like Mourinho – to be able to make these big changes without worrying about the negatives of that.
There are so many players on Real Madrid's bench that are better suited for these opportunities than the ones mentioned above, but they keep remaining on the bench. These four continue to be in the starting lineup despite not showing enough quality to deserve to be in there. Hopefully that changes in the future, but at the moment it just does not seem like it will.
