The World Cup is in full swing and football fans around the world are focused on supporting their respective countries. In the meantime, Real Madrid are busy reinforcing their squad in the background for the upcoming season. Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella and Ibrahim Konate have already been officially announced by Los Blancos, while the signing of Denzel Dumfries is said to have also been completed.
The last campaign was hard to watch, and Real seemed out of sorts by the end. Fortunately, Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as the new manager, and there is hope that the Special One will help the club regain its lost glory. Alongside the Portuguese tactician, the new signings will certainly play a huge role in that moving forward.
That said, these signings alone won't be enough, and Los Blancos will need to add a few more players to their roster. Few would argue that another centre-back, preferably a left-footed one, is the need of the hour after the poor defensive displays from the current options. So, here is a list of three left-footed centre-backs Real need to give Mourinho.
Nico Schlotterbeck
Schlotterbeck has been on Real's radar for quite some time now. The 26-year-old has been a key part of Borussia Dortmund's defence in recent years. This season, he has appeared in 37 matches and has also scored five goals. Notably, he is also a regular presence in Germany's national team.
Schlotterbeck would be a perfect addition to Real's squad. He is naturally left-footed, tall, defensively sound, and can also carry the ball during transition plays. So it's fair to say that he ticks all the boxes the Merengues are looking for.
Moreover, Mourinho, who is known for setting up some of the toughest defensive systems to break down, could really use someone like Schlotterbeck during his second stint at Real.
Alessandro Bastoni
Bastoni is another name that has been linked with Real before. There have even been reports that Mourinho is keen to add the Italian to his squad.
The 27-year-old made 40 appearances for Inter in all competitions last campaign. He carries a lot of experience under his belt, having played for the Italian giants since 2017.
It will be really interesting to see if Real can manage to add Bastoni as well, having already secured the signature of his teammate Dumfries.
Goncalo Inacio
Inacio has emerged as one of the best Portuguese defenders in recent times. The Sporting star has appeared in 46 matches for his club this season, scoring three goals and providing as many assists.
The left-footed defender could be a really good option for Real if they fail to land their other targets. The 24-year-old has a long career ahead of him and could potentially become one of the best defenders in the world if he continues on the right path.
